Dutch Crocus
AS SEEN ON YOUTUBE!
Spring! Spring! Spring!
Dutch Crocus was originally drawn for my “Color Magic” series on YouTube; you can watch the video here.
I absolutely love bulb flowers but I’m a terrible gardener and I never get my bulbs into the ground in time for spring color. As a result, I always force a pot of bulbs indoors each year and these are the crocus I wish I could grow (remember, I’m a terrible gardener?).
Ask any artist and there’s always a weird backstory for the props in their still life drawings. Want to know this one?
I’m drawing this crocus in December and the shoe shown here is part of the pair I’ve been setting out for Santa for years. My family is part Flemish and I suppose this a tradition although I don’t know anyone else who puts out a shoe instead of a stocking. Maybe it’s a joke my dad started which has lasted a bit longer than he expected? Anyway, the shoe was sitting here as part of the Christmas decor and when I started drawing the crocus from a photo reference, it just felt natural to plop them into a shoe.
“Belgian Crocus” didn’t make much sense, so I changed the name to Dutch… apologies to my grandmother for mis-nationalizing her.

This digital stamp is ideal for Copic Marker, colored pencil, watercolor, or mixed media applications. Illustrated by Amy Shulke.
